Physician Assistant- Billings Women's Prison

Position Description

For more than 40 years, Planned Parenthood of Montana (PPMT) has worked in our state to make sure that all people have the information and means to make free and responsible decisions about their families and their futures. PPMT operates 5 health centers across our region providing medical services, advocacy, and education to over 13,000 women, men and teens each year. We are seeking talented and enthusiastic employees to join our team.

  • 16 hours per week
  • Pay range is $42 - $45 per hour

Provide primary care including mental health care to incarcerated persons within the Billings Women's Prison. Ensure continual access to healthcare for incarcerated persons. Oversee the delivery of medical care and ensure meeting the identified needs of the incarcerated population. Follow the guidelines of the Department of Corrections and the Women's Prison.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide primary care including women's health for offenders including obtaining a complete medical history and physical exam
  • Interpret and integrate data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as needed
  • Collaborate with nursing staff in managing acute and long term medical needs of incarcerated men and women
  • Order appropriate lab and diagnostic procedures
  • Synthesize data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan utilizing principles of prevention
  • Prescribe medications
  • Instruct inmates regarding medication use and treatment of illness
  • Interview and advise inmates regarding health and illness prevention
  • Utilize community resources to teach, provide follow up care as appropriate, and provide other support services
  • Maintain and review inmate medical records, charts and other pertinent data
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with nursing personnel as to the course of treatment
  • Manage medical emergencies
  • Provide monitoring
  • Document activities with incarcerated populations clearly, thoroughly and include time
  • Work closely with mental health providers, Department of Correction staff, Detention Center staff and management, and PPMT staff.
  • Be available for consultation for nursing, mental health and facility staff
  • Limited medical supervision of nursing staff; sign off charts
  • Assist in the evaluation of staff and recommend disciplinary action when appropriate
  • Assist in hiring and oversee orientation of new staff members
  • Follow all Department of Corrections rules, regulations and policies and ensure that medical staff is meeting the same standards
  • Follow all policies and procedures as they are related to the Detention Center and Planned Parenthood in general
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of an approved Physician Assistant program or Advanced Practice NP degree.
  • Currently licensed to practice in state of Montana
  • Two years experience providing primary care and women's health care

  • Remain violation free from Detention Center disciplinary action
  • Adhere to dress code
  • Ability to deal with pressure to meet deadlines, to be accurate, and to handle constantly changing situations.
  • Ability to work well with others in a positive, respectful and professional manner
  • Ability to work independently and as a successful team member
  • Maintain a background free from violations of laws, rules, etc.
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled; complete work in designated time
